Court of Auditors: 100,000 Jobs to be Cut
The French Court of Auditors has proposed cutting 100,000 jobs in local government to achieve savings and reduce the public deficit, which is expected to exceed 6% of GDP by 2024. This reduction would bring the number of local authority employees back to early 2010 levels, leading to an annual saving of 4.1 billion euros by 2030. Personnel costs, which represent a quarter of local government spending, have increased significantly, particularly within inter-municipal bodies. However, local elected officials contest this proposal, arguing that it would weaken the communes’ ability to act.
Revaluation of the SMIC on November 1, 2024
As of November 1, 2024, the SMIC will be revalued by 2%, in line with periodic adjustments aimed at preserving employees’ purchasing power. The gross monthly SMIC will increase from €1,766.92 to €1,802.25. Although this rise is moderate, it will require employers to update payroll systems and adjust the wages of employees earning the legal minimum. Companies must therefore prepare for this change and anticipate its impact on payroll and human resources management.
CFE: Automatic Direct Debit Until November 30
Every year, businesses in France are required to pay the Cotisation Foncière des Entreprises (CFE), a local tax based on the rental value of real estate used for business purposes. The deadline for paying the balance of this tax is December 15, 2024. Tax notices will be issued in November, but businesses wishing to secure timely payment can now opt for direct debit on the due date. This option ensures that the CFE is paid on time, avoiding any risk of penalties for late payment.
